What is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing is a blanket term for all your online marketing efforts. It is the promotion of products using digital technologies.

Which encompasses many different types including:

SEO - Search Engine Optimisation

What is it?

SEO is one of the oldest types of Digital Marketing, the methods have changed over the years but the aim is still the same; to rank as high up in the Google organic seraches as possible.

Who is it for?

All businesses need some type of SEO on their website to even feature on Google's spectrum. Some need it more than others. To find out if it's worth it for your business use the Google Adword Keyword Planner tool and find out what keyword searches are being done around your buisness.

How much is it?

How much money do you have to spend? you could spend a little or a lot, it depends on the competition in your industry, but for a starting point you should be looking at a minimum of £600 a month to make it worthwhile.

 

PPC - Pay Per Click Advertising

What is it?

This is the sponsored links you see in Google's searches, but they are generally a short term comitment, when you stop paying the ads stop being shown. They are links you pay for to rank above the organic searches that cost you every time someone clicks on your ad.

Who is it for?

Anyone can use it, but the costs per click can be costly depending on how competitive the market is.

How much is it?

This can be as little as 50p and as much as £100 per click, normally you are looking around £2-£3 it depends on much a click is worth to you. An agency to run this for you could cost from a few of hundred pounds to a few thousand depending on how complex the campaign is and how be your business is.

 

Social Media Marketing

What is it?

Is everything you would do on all social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram to connect with your customers and prospects. It helps grow your customer base and relationships in the fastest way.

Who is it for?

Anyone, most B2C companies benefit from it but also if you're starting out in general it's good to use.

How much is it?

If you do it yourself it's free, but this require a lot of time with constant updates, if you have an agency do it for you this can start at a couple of hundred pound a month. If you are starting out, it's probably more beneficial to do it yourself to start with.

Content Marketing

What is it?

It's a method of digital marketing that uses good content that your customers want to read to encourage new sales and leads online. Most of the time the content is taken from blogs on your website, driving new traffic through Google.

Who is it for?

Anyone, if you want to get ahead of your competition get going on it now.

How much is it?

You need a website and domain name and hosting but then if you have control over your website you can produce the blogs yourself although it take a lot of time, skill and dedication, or you can pay someone to do it for you on a monthly basis. Having one new blog added a month is the minimum you would want to keep content fresh from Google's perspective.

 

Affiliate Marketing

What is it?

Affiliates are like Salesmen, they sell your stuff for you and you pay commision to them for doing so. You can sit back and let someone else do the work, but you have to share the profits with them, there is no upfront cost though.

Who is it for?

Mainly B2C and eCommerce businesses as you have to track sales for it to work well.

How much is it?

It doesn't have to cost you anything, but make sure you set up clear terms and conditions first before you had your products over to other people.

 

Viral Marketing

What is it?

Whenyou do something totally weird, or on trend in a current popular topic which gets you noticed and shared, quickly, a lot. It normally enocurages a big spike in traffic visiting your site over a short period of time.

Who is it for?

Mainly B2C businesses as it's going to reach a bigger audience compared to a service.

How much is it?

It can cost you thousands when done correctly, but can also boost your bottom line.

 

Email Marketing

What is it?

A way of communticating with your audience to promote content, discounts and events as well as directing customers to your website.

Who is it for?

Anyone, to send to your mailing list of customers and prospects.

How much is it?

Time, a lot of time to put content together and design the campaign and also finding an appropriate mail provider. You can have free accounts but these are limited to a number of contacts, over this you have a monthly cost depending on the size of your database. Most agencies can recomend a service they use and will write the content and design the emails for you for a monthly fee, this would normally be for so many campaigns per year/month.
